Detail Specifications

The CBS350-8P-E-2G is a Cisco switch that is designed for use in enterprise networks. It is a Layer 3 switch, which means that it can perform routing functions in addition to switching. The switch has 8 ports, which can be used to connect devices such as computers, servers, and other network devices.

The switch is managed, which means that it can be configured and monitored remotely using a web interface or command-line interface. This allows network administrators to easily configure and troubleshoot the switch.

The switch also supports PoE+, which is a variation of the Power over Ethernet (PoE) standard. PoE+ allows the switch to supply power to devices connected to it, such as IP phones and cameras, over the Ethernet cables. This eliminates the need for separate power supplies for these devices and can simplify network deployment.

The switch also has 2 SFP (small form-factor pluggable) ports which allows for high-speed fiber connectivity, these ports provide an easy way to connect the switch to other devices in the network via fiber optic cabling.

Resiliency and High Availability

The CBS350-8P-E-2G Cisco switch is designed with resiliency and high availability in mind. Resiliency refers to the ability of the switch to continue operating in the event of a failure or malfunction, while high availability refers to the ability of the switch to provide reliable and consistent network services.

One of the key features of the CBS350-8P-E-2G that contributes to its resiliency and high availability is its support for Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP). LACP allows multiple physical links to be grouped together to form a single logical link, increasing the bandwidth and providing redundancy. In the event of a failure on one link, traffic can automatically be shifted to the other links in the group, ensuring that the network remains operational.

The switch also supports Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) and Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) which allows network loops to be detected and prevented from forming, ensuring that the network remains stable.

Furthermore, the switch supports Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP), which allows multiple routers to share a virtual IP address and provides redundancy in case of a failure of the primary router.

Additionally, the switch supports Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP) which allows a group of routers to work together to present the appearance of a single virtual router to hosts on a LAN, providing redundancy in case of a failure of the primary router.

Remote Management Protocol

The CBS350-8P-E-2G Cisco switch supports several remote management protocols that allow network administrators to configure and monitor the switch remotely. The most common remote management protocols are:

  • Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP): SNMP is a widely used protocol for managing and monitoring network devices. The switch supports SNMP version 1, 2c, and 3, which allows network administrators to retrieve information from the switch, such as the status of interfaces, and to configure the switch remotely.
  • Telnet: Telnet is a protocol that allows network administrators to remotely connect to the switch and execute commands via a command-line interface. Telnet uses a plain-text communication, which is unencrypted and not recommended to use in production environment.
  • Secure Shell (SSH): SSH is a secure version of Telnet, which encrypts the communication between the network administrator and the switch. This makes it more secure than Telnet and is recommended to use in production environments.
  • Web-based GUI: The switch also has a web-based graphical user interface (GUI) which allows network administrators to configure and monitor the switch remotely using a web browser.
  • Cisco Network Assistant (CNA): CNA is a Cisco tool that allows network administrators to manage multiple Cisco devices from a single console. CNA can be used to configure and monitor the switch remotely.

Different Types of Switches

Networking switches vary widely depending on the number of devices they can support, network bandwidth/speed, and form factor. Switches for small offices will have anything between 4 and 8 ports and can fit on a desk. For larger office network implementation, switches may have 24 ports, 48 ports, 96 ports, and 128 ports and are rack-mountable between 1U and 4U. Switches come in different types depending on the network speed and tasks they support. These include 40/100 Gbps, 10 Gigabit (up to 10000 Mbps), Gigabit Ethernet (up to 1000 Mbps), Power over Ethernet, and Fast Ethernet (10/100 Mbps).

Unmanaged Switches

The unmanaged switches offer fixed configurations on a plug-and-play basis. It is the most basic switch and there are a few choices in the market. These switches are affordable, but the basic features make them inappropriate for enterprise applications.

Managed Switches

The number of features and level of functionality improves with managed switches, making them ideal for enterprise and business applications. These switches are built with the command-line interface for ease of configuration. Equally, they support SNMP agents that come in handy when troubleshooting network issues.

The security on managed switches is better and will protect different types of traffic. Other features include support for virtual LANs, IP routing, and quality of service settings. Managed switches are more expensive compared to all other types of switches.

Smart Switches

Smart switches refer to switches that possess more features than those unmanaged switches but do not have the full features of managed switches. Smart switches are more cost-effective than managed switches.

Some of the limitations of the smart switches are a lack of telnet access support, Web GUIs, and a lack of many features for VLANs. They are affordable compared to a fully managed switch and are suitable for a smaller computer network.

Modular Switches

Modular switches allow the addition of expansion modules as the network expands. The expansion modules allow for more networked devices but are application-specific. They may include wireless access points, firewalls, or network analysis tools. The flexibility of a modular networking switch comes at a higher cost.
