Cables - USB Cable

USB cables make it possible to control switches and other equipment in a data center that supports a USB connection. Most of the USB ports on the switches are used for connecting mice and keyboards. For this reason, 3-meter USB cables used in such an environment are not just the type-A cable that we use for our handsets. They also act as adapters with VGA terminals to transmit video signals. When shopping for USB cables, take note of this and only use device-specific cables for better performance.

USB Cable Types

There are many variations of USB cable on the market. When you are shopping for one, you need to understand what you are looking for. The different types depend on the connectors and ports where the cable plugs into. A wrong USB cable choice will render it useless because it will not get into the host port. So, it is possible to understand the cable type before making the final purchase.

USB Type-A: This is one of the most common types of USB cable. When you want to connect your phone to a computer to transfer data, the end that gets into the computer or laptop is type A. So, USB type A will only get into a USB Type-A port.

USB Type B: The type of USB cable that printers and scanners use to connect to your computer is this type. It is not very popular as other USB types that we will mention here.

Mini USB cable: Older versions of the camera, MP3 players, and other game controllers connect to a computer through this port. It is equally not so common because micro USB is quickly facing it out.

Micro-USB cable: With a high demand for slimmer devices, micro-USB cable is gaining popularity. This is the cable type you will find at the end of a powered USB cable for charging your phone.

USB type C or USB-C: Due to the demand for a higher data transfer rate, USB-C was developed. It is currently the most preferred type, and many devices that need high-speed data transfer are using it. You can also find it in smartphones and many other handheld gadgets.

High-Speed USB Cable

USB protocol has undergone many modifications, leading to USB 1.0, USB 2.0, and USB 3.0. There is an increase in data transfer speed with every generation. That means the current high-speed cable is the USB 3.0, and the same goes for the port. To achieve a data transfer rate of 10Gbps of USB 3.0, you need a USB 3.0 port. Otherwise, the data rate will default to the lowest bandwidth in the connection.
