Network Management and Security Features
The Dell S4048-ON L3 Managed Switch (1GG35) is a high-performance network switch that provides advanced network management and security features to help ensure a secure and reliable network infrastructure.
Some of the key network management features of the S4048-ON include:
- Layer 3 Routing: The switch supports static and dynamic routing protocols, including OSPF, BGP, and VRRP, to provide enhanced routing capabilities and increase network scalability.
- Virtual Link Trunking (VLT): VLT provides a high-availability solution by allowing multiple physical switches to act as a single logical switch.
- Multiple Link Aggregation (MLAG): MLAG enables multiple switches to share a single IP address and provides resiliency in the event of a switch failure.
- Quality of Service (QoS): QoS allows administrators to prioritize network traffic based on specific criteria, such as IP address, port, or application, to ensure that critical network traffic is always prioritized.
As for security features, the S4048-ON includes:
- Access Control Lists (ACLs): ACLs provide fine-grained control over network access, allowing administrators to define which users, devices, or applications are allowed to access the network.
- Network Authentication: The switch supports 802.1X network authentication to ensure that only authorized users and devices can access the network.
- Secure Shell (SSH): SSH provides secure remote access to the switch, allowing administrators to securely manage the switch from a remote location.
- SSL Encryption: SSL encryption provides secure communication between the switch and network management applications, ensuring that sensitive information remains confidential.
Deployment and Configuration Options
The Dell S4048-ON (model 1GG35) is a Layer 3 managed switch that provides advanced network functionality and supports flexible deployment and configuration options. Some of the key features of the switch include:
- 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) connectivity: The switch supports 48 10 GbE ports and 4 40 GbE uplink ports for high-speed network connections.
- L3 Routing: The switch supports L3 routing protocols such as OSPF, BGP, and VRRP, enabling it to route traffic between different subnets within a network.
- VLANs: The switch supports VLANs, which can be used to segment a network into smaller virtual networks to increase security and simplify network management.
- Link Aggregation: The switch supports Link Aggregation (LAG) to combine multiple physical links into a single logical link to increase network reliability and reduce network downtime.
- CLI and Web UI: The switch can be managed using both the command-line interface (CLI) and the web-based user interface (Web UI), providing flexibility for administrators to choose the management method that best suits their needs.
- Stackable: The switch supports stacking, allowing multiple switches to be connected together and managed as a single entity.
In terms of deployment and configuration options, the Dell S4048-ON provides a number of options to meet the needs of different network environments. Some of the key deployment and configuration options include:
- Pre-Configured Templates: The switch can be pre-configured with templates that simplify the deployment process and reduce the time and effort required to get the switch up and running.
- Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP): The switch supports ZTP, which enables it to be automatically configured and brought online without manual intervention.
- Plug and Play (PnP): The switch supports PnP, allowing it to be quickly and easily deployed without the need for manual configuration.
- Scripting: The switch supports scripting, which enables administrators to automate complex network configurations and deployment tasks.
Network Connectivity Options
The Dell S4048-ON L3 Managed Switch is a high-performance, scalable and flexible switch designed for data center and enterprise environments. The 1GG35 model provides the following network connectivity options:
- 40 x Gigabit Ethernet ports - These ports provide fast and reliable connectivity for wired devices with speeds up to 1Gbps.
- 4 x 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports - These ports offer faster speeds for high-bandwidth applications and can be used for uplinks to other network switches.
- 4 x 40 Gigabit Ethernet ports - These ports allow for high-speed connectivity to other network switches and provide the ability to aggregate multiple 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections.
- Stackable Design - The S4048-ON switch supports stacking, which allows multiple switches to be connected together to form a single logical switch. This provides increased scalability and resiliency, and enables administrators to manage the entire stack as a single entity.
- Advanced L3 Features - The switch provides advanced L3 features such as routing, dynamic IP address allocation, and quality of service (QoS). These features allow for flexible network design and can improve the performance of the network by prioritizing traffic.
- PoE+ support - The switch also supports Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+) which enables it to deliver both data and power to connected devices, eliminating the need for separate power cabling.

About Refurbished Products
Different Types of Switches
Networking switches vary widely depending on the number of devices they can support, network bandwidth/speed, and form factor. Switches for small offices will have anything between 4 and 8 ports and can fit on a desk. For larger office network implementation, switches may have 24 ports, 48 ports, 96 ports, and 128 ports and are rack-mountable between 1U and 4U. Switches come in different types depending on the network speed and tasks they support. These include 40/100 Gbps, 10 Gigabit (up to 10000 Mbps), Gigabit Ethernet (up to 1000 Mbps), Power over Ethernet, and Fast Ethernet (10/100 Mbps).
The unmanaged switches offer fixed configuration on a plug-and-play basis. It is the most basic switch and there are a few choices in the market. These switches are affordable, but the basic features make them inappropriate for enterprise applications.
The number of features and level of functionality improves with managed switches, making them ideal for enterprise and business applications. These switches are built with the command-line interface for ease of configuration. Equally, they support SNMP agents that come in handy when troubleshooting network issues.
The security on managed switches is better and will protect different types of traffic. Other features include support for virtual LANs, IP routing, and quality of service settings. Managed switches are more expensive compared to all other types of switches.
Smart switches refer to switches that possess more features than those of unmanaged switches but do not have the full features of managed switches. Smart switches are more cost-effective than managed switches.
Some of the limitations of the smart switches are a lack of telnet access support, Web GUIs, and a lack of many features for VLANs. They are affordable compared to a fully managed switch and are suitable for a smaller computer network.
Modular switches allow the addition of expansion modules as the network expands. The expansion modules allow for more networked devices but are application-specific. They may include wireless access points, firewalls, or network analysis tools. The flexibility of a modular networking switch comes at a higher cost.
