Installation and Configuration

Installation and configuration of the HPE 10GBE Ethernet Pass-Thru Module for C-Class Bladesystem is a critical step in setting up a high-performance networking infrastructure for your data center. This module is designed to provide a direct and non-blocking 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity between server blades and upstream switches, resulting in increased throughput, lower latency, and reduced power consumption.

To install and configure the 10GBE Ethernet Pass-Thru Module, follow these steps:

  • Physical Installation: Before installing the module, ensure that the chassis is powered off and disconnected from the power source. Open the chassis and locate the available slots for installing the Pass-Thru Module. Carefully remove the module from its packaging, align it with the slot, and gently slide it into place. Secure the module using the screws provided.
  • Connect the Cables: Once the module is securely installed, connect the Ethernet cables to the corresponding ports on the module. The Pass-Thru Module has 16 external 10GBASE-T Ethernet ports that support both RJ45 and SFP+ connectors, as well as four internal stacking ports for connecting to other Pass-Thru Modules.
  • Configure the Pass-Thru Module: After the physical installation and cable connection, it's time to configure the Pass-Thru Module. HPE provides a web-based graphical user interface (GUI) and a command-line interface (CLI) for managing the module's settings. The GUI allows for an intuitive and user-friendly configuration of the Pass-Thru Module, while the CLI provides a more granular and detailed control over the settings.
  • Assign IP addresses to ports: To allow for management and monitoring of the module, you must assign IP addresses to the ports. This can be done through the GUI or CLI, and you should ensure that each port has a unique IP address. You can also configure VLANs and QoS settings to optimize traffic flow and prioritize critical applications.
  • Configure Uplink Ports: Once the IP addresses have been assigned, you can configure the uplink ports that connect to the upstream switches. You can choose from various modes of operation, such as LACP, static port-channel, or single port. You can also configure link aggregation groups (LAGs) and trunking protocols to provide redundancy and load balancing.
  • Verify and Test the Configuration: After the Pass-Thru Module is configured, it's essential to verify and test the settings to ensure that everything is working as expected. You can use various tools such as ping, traceroute, and network performance testing tools to measure latency, throughput, and packet loss.
Management and Monitoring

Managing and monitoring the HPE 10GBE Ethernet Pass-Thru Module for C-Class Bladesystem is essential to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and security of your data center network infrastructure. The module provides a wide range of management and monitoring features that allow you to monitor the health and performance of the module, troubleshoot issues, and configure advanced settings.

Here are some of the management and monitoring features of the HPE 10GBE Ethernet Pass-Thru Module:

  • Web-based Graphical User Interface (GUI): The Pass-Thru Module includes a web-based GUI that provides an intuitive and user-friendly interface for managing and monitoring the module. You can access the GUI from any web browser and use it to view and configure various settings such as port configurations, VLANs, QoS, and link aggregation.
  • Command-line Interface (CLI): The Pass-Thru Module also supports a command-line interface (CLI) that allows you to configure advanced settings and perform advanced troubleshooting tasks. The CLI provides a more granular and detailed control over the settings compared to the GUI.
  • SNMP Support: The Pass-Thru Module supports Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), which allows you to monitor the module's performance and health using SNMP-based management tools such as HPE Intelligent Management Center (IMC) or third-party tools. SNMP provides a standardized way of monitoring network devices and collecting performance data.
  • Port Mirroring: The Pass-Thru Module supports port mirroring, which allows you to replicate traffic from one or more ports to a monitoring port. Port mirroring is useful for troubleshooting network issues and analyzing network traffic.
  • Remote Monitoring (RMON): The Pass-Thru Module supports Remote Monitoring (RMON), which provides advanced monitoring capabilities such as packet capture, packet analysis, and traffic statistics. RMON allows you to monitor the module's performance and diagnose issues in real-time.
  • Syslog Support: The Pass-Thru Module supports Syslog, which allows you to send system logs to a centralized logging server for analysis and troubleshooting. Syslog is useful for identifying and troubleshooting issues that may not be immediately apparent from the GUI or CLI.
  • Firmware Updates: The Pass-Thru Module allows you to update the firmware of the module to ensure that it is up-to-date and free of security vulnerabilities. Firmware updates can be performed through the GUI or CLI.
