Remote Management and Monitoring

The WS-X4302-GB Cisco Catalyst 4500 Ethernet Module is a 2-port module that can be used with the Cisco Catalyst 4500 series switches and provides remote management and monitoring capabilities.

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP): SNMP is a widely-used network management protocol that allows administrators to monitor and manage network devices, including switches, routers, and servers. The module supports SNMP versions 1, 2c, and 3, which provide different levels of security and access control.

HTTP and HTTPS: The module supports HTTP and HTTPS, which are web-based management protocols that allow administrators to access the module's web interface for configuration and management. HTTPS provides an added layer of security by encrypting the communication between the administrator's web browser and the module.

Telnet and SSH: Telnet and SSH are command-line based remote management protocols that allow administrators to access the module's command-line interface (CLI) for configuration and management. Telnet is unencrypted and less secure, while SSH encrypts the communication between the administrator's terminal and the module, providing added security.

Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP): CDP is a Cisco proprietary protocol that allows network devices to discover and learn about other Cisco devices that are connected to the network. This can be useful in situations where the IP address of the module is not known.

CiscoWorks: CiscoWorks is a Cisco proprietary network management software that provides a comprehensive view of the network and allows administrators to manage and monitor multiple devices from a single console.

Robust Security and Dynamic Quality

The WS-X4302-GB is a module for the Cisco Catalyst 4500 series of switches, providing 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports for server switching. The following are the key security and quality features of this module:

  • Quality of Service (QoS): The WS-X4302-GB supports QoS, allowing administrators to prioritize network traffic based on specific needs, such as voice and video.
  • Spanning Tree Protocol (STP): The module supports STP, which helps prevent network loops by creating a loop-free topology in the network.
  • Access Control Lists (ACLs): The module supports ACLs, which allow administrators to restrict access to the network based on specific criteria, such as source IP address or destination port.
  • Advanced security: The WS-X4302-GB supports advanced security features such as 802.1X authentication, which restricts access to the network based on user credentials, and Dynamic ARP Inspection (DAI), which helps prevent ARP spoofing attacks.
  • Hot-swappable: The module is hot-swappable, meaning it can be removed and replaced without affecting the rest of the network.
  • Scalability: The WS-X4302-GB is part of the Cisco Catalyst 4500 series, a highly scalable and modular switching platform, allowing administrators to easily add additional modules and expand the network as needed.

Quality of Service (QoS) Capabilities

The WS-X4302-GB Cisco Catalyst 4500 Ethernet Module is a 2-port module that can be used with the Cisco Catalyst 4500 series switches and provides Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities to prioritize and manage different types of network traffic.

Classification and Marking: The module supports several classification and marking methods that allow administrators to identify and classify different types of network traffic based on various criteria such as IP addresses, port numbers, and protocols. This allows the module to apply different QoS policies to different types of traffic.

Traffic Shaping and Policing: The module supports traffic shaping and policing, which are techniques used to control and limit the rate of traffic flowing through the module. Traffic shaping allows administrators to control the rate of traffic and ensure that it conforms to a specific rate, while policing drops or marks packets that exceed a specified rate.

Congestion Management: The module supports several congestion management techniques, such as Weighted Random Early Detection (WRED) and Weighted Tail Drop (WTD), to manage and control network congestion. WRED randomly drops packets before a queue becomes full, while WTD drops packets when a queue becomes full.

Prioritization: The module supports several prioritization techniques, such as Class-Based Weighted Fair Queuing (CBWFQ) and Low Latency Queuing (LLQ), to prioritize different types of traffic and ensure that critical traffic is given priority over less important traffic.

About Refurbished Products

Refurbished products are typically refurbished by an Original Manufacturer or an affiliate of the manufacturer or 3rd party facility. This product may have minor blemishes due to normal product usage and doesn't necessarily come with documentation and software unless indicated, but has been well tested and generally has never had any defects.

Different Types of Switches

Networking switches vary widely depending on the number of devices they can support, network bandwidth/speed, and form factor. Switches for small offices will have anything between 4 and 8 ports and can fit on a desk. For larger office network implementation, switches may have 24 ports, 48 ports, 96 ports, and 128 ports and are rack-mountable between 1U and 4U. Switches come in different types depending on the network speed and tasks they support. These include 40/100 Gbps, 10 Gigabit (up to 10000 Mbps), Gigabit Ethernet (up to 1000 Mbps), Power over Ethernet, and Fast Ethernet (10/100 Mbps).

Unmanaged Switches

The unmanaged switches offer fixed configuration on a plug-and-play basis. It is the most basic switch and there are a few choices in the market. These switches are affordable, but the basic features make them inappropriate for enterprise applications.

Managed Switches

The number of features and level of functionality improves with managed switches, making them ideal for enterprise and business applications. These switches are built with the command-line interface for ease of configuration. Equally, they support SNMP agents that come in handy when troubleshooting network issues.

The security on managed switches is better and will protect different types of traffic. Other features include support for virtual LANs, IP routing, and quality of service settings. Managed switches are more expensive compared to all other types of switches.

Smart Switches

Smart switches refer to switches that possess more features than those of unmanaged switches but do not have the full features of managed switches. Smart switches are more cost-effective than managed switches.

Some of the limitations of the smart switches are a lack of telnet access support, Web GUIs, and a lack of many features for VLANs. They are affordable compared to a fully managed switch and are suitable for a smaller computer network.

Modular Switches

Modular switches allow the addition of expansion modules as the network expands. The expansion modules allow for more networked devices but are application-specific. They may include wireless access points, firewalls, or network analysis tools. The flexibility of a modular networking switch comes at a higher cost.
