10 Gigabit Ethernet Connectivity
The HPE JL824A 48G PoE+ 4SFP+ EI Switch is equipped with 48 ports of 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GE) connectivity, providing high-speed data transfer for demanding network applications. These 10GE ports use the 10GBase-X standard, which supports a variety of transceiver modules such as SFP+ and SFP28 for optical connectivity over distances up to 80km. This allows the switch to easily connect to other 10GE devices on the network, such as servers, storage systems, and other network switches.
With 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, the HPE JL824A switch can support high-bandwidth applications such as virtualization, cloud computing, and big data analytics, as well as support for high-definition video, voice, and other multimedia applications. The 10GE ports also support full-duplex operation, providing a maximum throughput of 20 Gbps per port.
Additionally, the 10GE ports also support advanced features such as Quality of Service (QoS), Virtual LANs (VLANs), Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP), and Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) to optimize network performance and reduce power consumption. Overall, the HPE JL824A 48G PoE+ 4SFP+ EI Switch provides a high-speed, reliable, and scalable solution for your data center and enterprise network needs.
Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+)
Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+) is a feature of the HPE JL824A 48G PoE+ 4SFP+ EI Switch that allows it to provide power to connected devices through the Ethernet cables. This feature eliminates the need for additional power supplies or electrical outlets for devices such as wireless access points, IP phones, and security cameras. PoE+ supports up to 30W per port, which means that the switch can support a wide variety of PoE-enabled devices with different power requirements.
The HPE JL824A switch supports IEEE 802.3at PoE+ standard, which is also known as PoE+ or PoE plus. This standard supports a power budget of up to 715W, which is more than double the power budget of the 802.3af standard. This allows you to connect more PoE-enabled devices to the switch and power them simultaneously.
The switch also supports advanced PoE management features such as PoE scheduling, PoE power allocation, PoE port status monitoring, and PoE fault alarm. This allows you to easily manage and monitor the power usage of connected devices, and also allows you to configure power usage for specific devices, ports, or VLANs to optimize power efficiency.
Overall, the Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+) feature of the HPE JL824A 48G PoE+ 4SFP+ EI Switch provides a cost-effective and convenient solution for powering a wide variety of devices, while also providing advanced management capabilities to optimize power usage.
Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRF)
Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRF) is a technology that allows the HPE JL824A 48G PoE+ 4SFP+ EI Switch to support multiple virtual routing tables within a single physical router. This allows the switch to provide separate routing domains, each with its own set of routes and routing protocols, on a single device.
VRF allows you to create multiple virtual routers on a single physical device, each with its own routing table, interfaces, and security policies. This allows you to segment the network into multiple isolated virtual networks, which can be used for different purposes, such as for different departments, customers, or applications.
The VRF technology allows for better network scalability and security, as it enables the separation of routing information between different virtual networks. This prevents network congestion and improves network security by isolating different virtual networks from each other.
Additionally, VRF technology allows for a more efficient use of network resources, as it allows the sharing of resources such as interfaces, memory, and CPU cycles between multiple virtual networks. It also allows for a more flexible network design, as it allows for different virtual networks to use different routing protocols, such as OSPF or BGP, and different routing policies.
Layer 3 Switching Capabilities
Layer 3 switching is a type of switching that allows the HPE JL824A 48G PoE+ 4SFP+ EI Switch to perform routing functions in addition to traditional switching functions. This allows the switch to forward packets based on their IP addresses, rather than just their MAC addresses.
Layer 3 switching provides a number of benefits over traditional Layer 2 switching. It allows for routing between different subnets within a network, which allows for better network segmentation and isolation. It also allows for the use of routing protocols such as OSPF, BGP, and EIGRP, which provide advanced routing capabilities, such as load balancing and redundancy.
Layer 3 switching also provides advanced security features, such as access control lists (ACLs) and virtual routing and forwarding (VRF) which can be used to filter and isolate traffic based on IP addresses, protocols, and ports. This can help prevent unauthorized access and protect sensitive data.
Additionally, Layer 3 switching also allows for better scalability, as it allows for the use of VLANs to segment the network into multiple virtual networks, each with its own routing table. This allows for a more efficient use of network resources, as it allows for the sharing of interfaces, memory, and CPU cycles between multiple virtual networks.

Different Types of Switches
Networking switches vary widely depending on the number of devices they can support, network bandwidth/speed, and form factor. Switches for small offices will have anything between 4 and 8 ports and can fit on a desk. For larger office network implementation, switches may have 24 ports, 48 ports, 96 ports, and 128 ports and are rack-mountable between 1U and 4U. Switches come in different types depending on the network speed and tasks they support. These include 40/100 Gbps, 10 Gigabit (up to 10000 Mbps), Gigabit Ethernet (up to 1000 Mbps), Power over Ethernet, and Fast Ethernet (10/100 Mbps).
Unmanaged Switches
The unmanaged switches offer fixed configurations on a plug-and-play basis. It is the most basic switch and there are a few choices in the market. These switches are affordable, but the basic features make them inappropriate for enterprise applications.
Managed Switches
The number of features and level of functionality improves with managed switches, making them ideal for enterprise and business applications. These switches are built with the command-line interface for ease of configuration. Equally, they support SNMP agents that come in handy when troubleshooting network issues.
The security on managed switches is better and will protect different types of traffic. Other features include support for virtual LANs, IP routing, and quality of service settings. Managed switches are more expensive compared to all other types of switches.
Smart Switches
Smart switches refer to switches that possess more features than those unmanaged switches but do not have the full features of managed switches. Smart switches are more cost-effective than managed switches.
Some of the limitations of the smart switches are a lack of telnet access support, Web GUIs, and a lack of many features for VLANs. They are affordable compared to a fully managed switch and are suitable for a smaller computer network.
Modular Switches
Modular switches allow the addition of expansion modules as the network expands. The expansion modules allow for more networked devices but are application-specific. They may include wireless access points, firewalls, or network analysis tools. The flexibility of a modular networking switch comes at a higher cost.
